Q:
What’s a serving size? How many in an ounce? How many do I need to eat to be healthy?
A:
A serving size of nuts is 30 grams (about 1-ounce). Pistachios have 49 kernels in a serving; (comparatively almonds have 23; hazelnuts 21; cashews 18; pecans 19; walnuts 14; macadamias 10-12). The FDA recommends 1.5 ounces in their Qualified Health Claim for nuts which states: "Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as pistachios, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.
